Shielding Hands..
Is it just me, or does this skill randomly stop protecting you before it ends?
It's killed me every single time it happens because by the time I can get a SoA off, it's too late.
Really annoying.

i think it's because you're using it in the wrong order. i believe you have to always cast [[protective spirit] first, then [[shielding hands] (could be the other way around, not sure). if you do it the other way, the initial damage received will be reduced by shielding hands then prot spirit, meaning you will still take damage. what you need is the initial damage reduced by prot spirit first and then that damage reduced by shielding hands.

This is correct...and to be 100% you do have to cast [Protective Spirit] before [shielding hands]. I don't remember what the rule is if you refresh them out of order, but it's a good idea to always prot first anyway.

It all depends on how much you got invested in protection this skill worked really well for me in The Catacombs while dye farming. It is what I used the most of.

He's right, shielding hands seems to stop functioning on some foes.
When i do bergen farm with my 55, i use shielding hands instead of SoA, because it lasts longer and lower casting time and i don't need -50 dmg reduction, only 5. I noticed that if i use shielding hands and a new mob is aggroed they don't get the damage reduction. Also i notice quite a few times that, in my bergen farm, the undead rangers after being KD by SoJ also envaded the effects of SH.

So basicly you need to make sure that when you cast Shielding Hands, the remaining duration of your current active Protective spirit, is greater than the duration of your shielding hands.
If it isnt, then at the time where the protective spirit would fade (refreshing prot spirit after applying shielding hands have no effect at this matter) the shielding hands bonus will start applying before the prot spirit effect, making you not get any dmg reduction.
So basicly refresh PS before using SH :P
Also i belive that the same thing counts for similar abilitys such as SoA and Stoneflesh Aura.

SH Is not a reliable skill to use when farming with your 55.
Most of the time i carry both SH and SoA because that allows you to literally take on as many enemies as you want.
but don't count on SH too much, that is try to renew SoA whenever possible since its more reliable.
After some time SH really does simply stops to work and i havent really found out every occasion in which it happens but what i know is that you should always cast it only after prot spirit and not before.
Renewing prot spirit while SH is up doesnt seem to have an effect.
The official wiki adresses this as a bug by the way which is possible imo.

SH needs to be cast after protective spirit. If you recast prot spirit, then shielding hands will diminish damage before prot spirit reduces it. SH needs to be cast after prot spirit to reduce damage to 0.
SOA allways works after prot spirit independant of casting order.
btw. when SH reduces damage to 0, essence bond stops giving you energy.

I agree that it is always good practice to cover your most important enchantment regardless. And the rule is this: If you recast PS while Sh is going it will still work as long as the SH was cast after the original PS.
PS --> SH --> PS should still reduce all dmg. If I have the rule wrong though plz tell me :P I'd rather not die because of this lol.

Wiki also lists this skill as bugged in that after a large number of hits it will stop reducing damage regardless of the casting order of p.spirit.

cast [Protective Spirit] folowed by[Shielding Hands],if u recast prot spirit u have a small window of oportunity ,well its preety large actually ,to recast shielding hands so the order always has to be prot spirit first and then shielding hands, because prot spirit stops u from losing more than 10% health from a spell or attack than shielding hands reduces the remaining 10% dmg u take

So this is why. I've been wondering why sh all of a sudden stops reducing damage when i'm 55 farming.
The people who have no idea what we are talking about probably haven't done any farming with sh.
I'm pretty used to this bug so i know when to refresh it but it's still an annoyance.
